Lesson 9 – I see nothing as it is now
What I think is kind of funny about today’s A Course in Miracles lesson is that it kicks off with them saying they don’t expect you to understand it intellectually. This gives me hope because trying to explain this when I only have some idea of its meaning, is kind of difficult!
This lesson follows on from Lessons 7 and 8, and from what I can gather, the word “see” is really more like “perceive”, which kind of helps!
Pam’s view
Pam Grout helps things further by referring to our brains being like a Jukebox playing the same songs over and over again, in particular old classics such as “Poor Me, Not Again” and “I really Must Be a Loser”. She says she used to believe the words her brain was telling her, so she was “seeing” herself as “poor me” or a “loser”, and so on.
She also said that before she completed the Course, she would let these same, depreciating lyrics play in her mind for days. But now she’s aware of them and can shut that “jukebox” off!
My interpretation
So today’s lesson as I understand it, is that we do not see things as we think they are – we’re instead seeing them as they are perceived.
Today’s exercise
The exercise to follow is to take around a minute, three or four times today, and apply the idea to physical things, like the following examples:
I do not see this laptop as it is now.
I do not see this banana as it is now.
I do not see this table as it is now.
If this gets you no closer to understanding what on earth this lesson is all about, never fear – you are NOT alone! Just follow the exercise and in time you will see it was building on an idea that will become clear in future lessons!
