Lesson 4: These thoughts do not mean anything
If you’ve read my previous three posts about what I’m learning from A Course in Miracles, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a bit of a theme going on right now. In fact, I believe we will have a total of 50 lessons assigned to this theme, so you might as well buckle yourself in for this wild ride!
Pam Grout’s interpretation of this lesson begins with her version of the title (which I really love!): “Fire the negative committee that meets inside your head.”
She refers to our minds that seem to be constantly judging, analysing, dissecting, and labeling everything. If your mind is anything like mine, you would agree that this happens pretty much all day!
This lesson, unlike the previous lessons, is something that must be applied in the moment. So whenever we catch ourselves thinking about something, we are to stop and notice our thoughts. We then simply repeat out loud or in our heads, “This thought that my cat is annoying, doesn’t mean anything”, “This thought that this traffic is driving me nuts, doesn’t mean anything”, “This thought that my house is a mess, doesn’t mean anything”…
What’s awesome about this lesson is that it reminds us that this “noise” we have going on in our heads all day, is not who we really are – it reminds us that this is just a commentary we’ve chosen to run at any given point.
I’m thinking that the more aware we become of the limiting thoughts in our head, the less we’ll think them, and therefore the better our lives will become!
