How to talk to spirits – 4 tips
When I was a kid I remember hearing a male voice saying “Hello” to me when I was alone in my room. I had no idea who the voice belonged to or where it came from, and I just thought my mind was playing tricks on me. The voice was quick and friendly, and I never heard anything beyond that. That’s my childhood experience with mediumship!
If you’re thinking you can’t do this because you’ve read about or you’ve seen a medium talking about their ability to see and talk to spirits as a child, for example, then think again! We all have this ability and while some people have been gifted with a natural ability that has grown since they were a small child, most of us have had little or no interactions with spirits at all.
How my mediumship knowledge grew
As I grew older, I became more and more interested in the “non-physical” world, and I liked to read stories of people who had managed to communicate with the other side. More recently, I found myself binge-watching videos on YouTube about mediumship and was amazed at how accurate some of these mediums’ readings were!
In 2019 after reading Journey of Souls by Dr Michael Newton (and what an incredible book that was!!), I decided to experience the whole “Life between lives” thing with a local practitioner called Marie.
This session changed my life forever! I became clear on my purpose, I received confirmation that we definitely don’t “die” when our physical bodies do, and I learned that I was on a mission in this lifetime on earth, and I needed to find some teachers!
How did I get into mediumship?
After my Life Between Lives session, my husband Laurie had his session, and afterwards, Marie handed Laurie a piece of paper which had the name and number of a mediumship teacher called Rhys, that she had been nudged to pass on to me.
I contacted Rhys and booked in to have a mediumship session with him. This session was an interesting one because I’d not lost a single family member in almost 20 years, so any information I had from those who had passed, was quite limited. Rhys brought in a family member who I’d never met, and provided a lot of information which my mother later confirmed as true. Information about my grandfather (who we sadly lost earlier this year) came through, which I had NO IDEA about! I’d never met Rhys in my life, so there’s no way he could have known this information about my dear old Pop!
During my session with Rhys it became very clear that I needed to hone my mediumship skills, and I have since translated this to “I need to be able to communicate better with the other side”, whether that be with the spirits of those who have passed over, with my guides, or with other beings that we cannot perceive with our five main senses.
Rhys has since put out a book which I am sure you will find valuable if you’re interested in mediumship, and it’s called How to talk to the dead in 10 easy steps. This has some great information about talking to the other side and I highly recommend it!
My first attempt at mediumship
Rhys hosted a number of Zoom events where he would talk to us about mediumship and during these calls we would each take a turn to see if we could pick anything up from the other side.
I didn’t feel overly confident in my abilities and I think I was a little bit “hit and miss”, but they were fun calls to be involved in!
A couple of months later I was invited by Rhys to attend a workshop he was running on mediumship. He understood that I didn’t feel too confident in my abilities, and promised to provide support along the way. To say I was both excited and aprehensive, is an understatement, but I was looking forward to learning more!
The first part of the day was the theory part, and then we were told we would each take a turn to come up to the front and do a reading for somebody in the group. EEP!
The people in this group were amazing, and they were all very good at tuning into the other side, and brought through some incredible messages! To say I was sh*tting myself, is an understatement! How could I measure up to these people??
By the time it was my turn to stand up, I had been feeling a male energy around me, and the number 47 kept coming through, followed by the number 27. So I went with that.
I picked up that the spirit I had connected with had not died suddenly but had not died of cancer – it was something else – some type of illness that eventually took his life though. It had something to do with his chest area, but I wasn’t sure if it was the heart or lungs. I picked up a bottle green-coloured bike, and I also picked up that he was tall with dark hair. And finally, he was showing me the rear end of an animal! This was confusing, but I now know that you just go with what you’re shown, and it’ll probably make sense to the person the message is meant for!
A moment later one of the attendees burst into tears. She told me that I had connected with her late fiancee who had died of heart failure after a transplant, at age 47. She told me that her birth date was the 27th and that the bike was the one he rode to work, and she confirmed he was tall with dark hair. As for the animal butt, that was his dog! This dog would back into you so you could pick him up to put him in the car! Haha!
And finally, he had a message for his fiancee – it was that she didn’t need to worry about what was bothering her at that time – he was perfectly ok with it. You see, she was struggling with a decision to do some travelling and to leave the dog with her brother, but she was feeling really guilty about it. So his message was to tell her that everything is ok – she should do what she wanted to do. Nice huh?
I was very surprised and very happy at the accuracy of the messages I had picked up, and it gave me a huge boost of confidence! Maybe I could do this after all!
What was even more wonderful, was the feeling of joy I felt inside, knowing I had helped this person to come to a sense of peace over a decision which had been bothering her.
How to talk to spirits
If you’ve read this far, you’re probably wondering how I was able to tune into the spirit of this man without having any training apart from some theory, and how you can do this too.
Here’s what I learned:
- It’s very important to quieten your mind. If you can get yourself into the Alpha state at the very least, you will be able to connect more easily. Try to keep your head out of the way by allowing the messages to come through and passing them on before you have a chance to analyse them.
- The messages can come through in many ways, such as feelings, visions, words coming into your mind, smells, and so on. Go with whatever you get.
- I could see images and I could also pick up words, but they flashed in and disappeared very quickly. They were also very subtle, which is why it’s so important to clear your head first.
- When a spirit or guide is near, you will often feel them around you. Mine often come in on my right side, diagonally behind me and it feels like a presence – like how you feel when somebody is standing too close.
- Trust what you receive and write down or speak the message immediately. Don’t question what you’re being told, and remember that sometimes you will receive messages which are more symbolic than literal. You will get better over time with practise!
What to do next
If learning how to talk to spirits really interests you, I suggest that you don’t waste any time! Here’s a few things you can do to help build your skills:
- Learn how to quieten your mind. Meditation works for some people, just sitting still in nature works for others. I think this part is about practise. Spend at least 10 minutes every day lying quietly without thoughts! It’s harder than you think but it gets easier over time.
- Research stories about mediumship. Read books on the subject (such as the book I mentioned above) which teaches you the basics of mediumship.
- Practise! Ask friends if you can do readings for them and ask for their feedback. Write down anything you learn from these sessions, so you can improve your skills. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done a mediumship reading before – this is really just about whether you can pick up on those subtle messages.
- If #3 feels too scary for you right now, try this: Ask in your mind or out loud, a question about something you don’t yet know the answer to. The question doesn’t have to be about anything important, but it must need a yes or no answer. As soon as you ask the question, go with the very first word (yes or no) which pops into your head. Now go and find out whether yes or no was the correct answer, and write down your findings. Keep doing this until you begin to trust the answers you “hear” coming into your mind.
When learning how to talk to spirits, be kind to yourself. Don’t expect yourself to be the “perfect” medium – it often takes time to not only tune into the messages, but to trust them enough to verbalise them too, so if you’re not 100% perfect from day 1, that’s perfectly ok! In fact, even the most experienced mediums aren’t 100% on target, even though they can get very close!
